Moving Forward

Homework

In the sense of work being done on my home, that is.

It is now possible to get into my attic from inside my home. Yeah! That means the pest exterminator can come deal with the horde of rats scampering and gamboling about up there.

While he was working on the access, my contractor (my friend Bill) found that the last roofing crew had dropped a load of roofing materials onto a plumbing vent pipe and broke it off at the connector. So tomorrow, my plumber (another friend, Carlos) comes back out and he will put that all back together for me. It has been venting sewer gasses into the attic space instead of out the roof, but Bill says it doesn’t have a nasty smell up there and he didn’t see any signs of damage from moisture. My roof is slated to be replaced this year due to its age so who knows how long that pipe has been that way…?!?

We also took the time to make a list of the items I want changed in the master bathroom. All my ideas are do-able and the estimated cost is right around where I was figuring – a little less actually, but I’m sure there will be something once we open the walls and re-do the pipes so I am mentally overpadding the budget just to be safe.

Currently, the countertops come up to just barely mid-thigh and the showerhead hits my shoulder. Those are both getting raised up so I will have a bathroom fit for an Amazon when I am done. I am ditching the old bathtub for a glass-enclosed shower and the mirror that runs the length of the long wall will be replaced by two smaller, framed mirrors. I strongly dislike mirrors and this house is *full* of them.

The useless three feet of blank countertop beyond the two sinks will be gone and we’re building a storage cabinet in there as this house is terribly short on storage space. As one of the wall sconce lights is there now, my contractor recommended two can lights in the ceiling to make up for that missing light and he can also rewire the exhaust fan to be on its own switch so it doesn’t run when I just need light at 5am. I *know* the neighbors can hear that fan in the wee hours and I dislike that thought as I know normal people don’t like the hours I keep.

My current idea is soft/cool gray walls, stone/tile shower, bare wood accents in a few places, and some light-colored vinyl flooring – not sure on the pattern there yet. That way, no matter what color accents I put in there for each season, it will look natural and balanced. That’s how it is in my head, anyway.

I am trying not to get too excited yet as I have some design work to do to pull this all together. But it should be both fun and educational and I’m looking forward to it.
